Q1 2026 Board of Trustees Orientation and Team Retreat

February 2026

Here at the Community Foundation of Howard County (CFHC) we began 2026 with energy, alignment, and a shared sense of purpose as board trustees and staff gathered at Athol Manor for our first quarter 2026 Board of Trustees Meeting, orientation, and team retreat.

Bringing together new trustees and long-serving leaders, the retreat was designed to strengthen connection, deepen understanding, and set a clear path forward for the year ahead. From the opening welcome by Board of Trustees Chair Barb Rishel to collaborative discussions throughout the day, the message was clear: CFHC’s leadership is united around impact, stewardship, and opportunity.

President & CEO Melissa Curtin grounded the conversation in both legacy and momentum, highlighting the Foundation’s mission, history, and 2026 strategic priorities. “Our role is to steward generosity with vision and integrity,” Melissa shared. “When we align our leadership, strategy, and community partnerships, we strengthen the very heart of philanthropy in Howard County.”

Throughout the retreat, trustees engaged deeply in our core pillars – resource development, communications, finance, investments, and grantmaking – each reinforcing the others in service of community impact. The Board reviewed year-end financial results, affirmed the 2026 budget, examined investment performance, and approved recent grants supporting nonprofits and scholarships across the region.

New philanthropic funds were welcomed, campaign commitments were renewed, and 2026 engagement plans were thoughtfully discussed. At every turn, the focus remained on growth – not simply in dollars, but in leadership, visibility, and collective responsibility.

Just as important as the agenda items was the spirit in the room. Personal introductions and shared reflections strengthened the connection between trustees and staff, underscoring that CFHC’s greatest asset is its people. The gathering created space not only for governance but for synergy, aligning fresh leadership with experienced guidance to move the Foundation confidently forward.

As the day concluded, trustees and the professional staff team left with renewed clarity and momentum. With disciplined planning, strong financial stewardship, and a commitment to collaboration, CFHC is poised to lead boldly in 2026 – advancing generosity, strengthening community, and continuing to serve as the heart of philanthropy in Howard County.
