Drs. Carlessia Hussein and Lillian Bauder Team Up to Enrich Young Lives

Carlessia Hussein and Lillian Bauder are shining examples of the impact that philanthropy can have on a community. Each woman has dedicated her life to creating positive change. Through their devotion and generosity, they have not only fashioned opportunities for deserving individuals, but have also inspired others to follow in their footsteps. It’s no coincidence that the Community Foundation of Howard County has recently honored these two women as Philanthropist of the Year (Bauder in 2022 and Hussein in 2023). Now they are teaming up.

Since 2016, the Carlessia Hussein Minority Scholarship program established by Dr. Hussein at the Community Foundation of Howard County has provided 341 middle school boys with access to summer enrichment programs that encourage leadership, academic achievement, character development, expand problem-solving skills and engender a sense of community. In 2024, the program provided 33 students with scholarships for summer learning opportunities with Howard County Public School System programs.

Dr. Lillian Bauder has always been a staunch supporter of education, especially believing in the power of education and empowerment early in a child’s life. Admiring Dr. Hussein’s efforts, Bauder created the endowed Bauder Scholarship Fund at CFHoCo to annually support 10 additional students with scholarships under the Hussein program effort. This summer the first cohort of 10 students were selected.
