Deepening Your Impact in Times of Need

In Howard County, nonprofits are woven into the fabric of everyday life. They support our neighbors in times of crisis, strengthen our schools, advance health and well-being, and enrich our community through the arts and civic life. Many of us see this impact firsthand – through organizations we support, volunteer with, or rely on in moments of need.

During times of economic uncertainty, that role becomes even more critical. As many are watching the markets closely this spring, it’s natural to feel cautious. At the same time, we know that when uncertainty rises, so too does the need across our community. That’s when philanthropy matters most.

As you think about your charitable giving this year, this may be a valuable moment to reflect not only on where you give – but how you give for lasting impact. One important consideration is expanding your portfolio of giving to include support for the Community Foundation of Howard County itself—the heart of philanthropy in our community.

There are several meaningful ways to do this:

  • Expanding grantmaking resources – Others give to CFHC’s discretionary and field-of-interest funds such as The Fund for Howard County, the Women’s Giving Circle or the Black Philanthropy Circle, helping increase the dollars we can deploy to local nonprofits. This flexible funding is especially powerful in times of uncertainty, allowing us to respond quickly and thoughtfully to the most pressing needs across Howard County.
  • Supporting CFHC’s operations Some donors choose to invest in the Foundation’s long-term strength. This type of support ensures that CFHC can continue serving as a trusted partner – connecting donors to causes, responding to emerging needs, and stewarding charitable resources with care for generations to come.
  • Taking a balanced approach Many donors choose a combination of both – continuing to support the organizations they care about directly or through donor-advised funds, while also investing in CFHC’s broader community leadership. This approach creates a more resilient and adaptable philanthropic strategy.

What makes this approach so impactful is the unique role of CFHC. As a permanent, community-rooted institution guided by local leadership, we bring deep knowledge of our region, strong relationships with nonprofit partners, and the ability to respond to both immediate challenges and long-term opportunities.

Especially in moments like these, expanding how you give can provide both flexibility and confidence – ensuring that your philanthropy supports the causes you care about while also strengthening the broader systems that sustain our community.

We are honored to partner with you in this work – and to continue building a more connected, resilient, and thriving Howard County together. If you have questions, would like to explore options, or simply want to talk through your giving goals, our team is always here to help.

Another meaningful way to support this work is by joining us at our Spring Party on May 14 at Elkridge Furnace Inn. Whether you attend, bring a friend, or consider sponsoring the event, your participation helps strengthen the Community Foundation of Howard County – and helps keep philanthropy at the heart of Howard County.
