Community Foundation of Howard County names Jim Sanders to board

The Community Foundation of Howard County, which raises, manages and distributes funds to support Howard County nonprofits, named Jim Sanders to the foundation’s board of trustees. Sanders is an independent consultant, community advocate and adjunct professor at The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

“The Community Foundation is an important contributor to the quality of Howard County. I am pleased to join the board and make a difference,” Sanders said.

At the Smith School of Business, Sanders has taught MBA courses on business management and entrepreneurship for 20 years. He is nationally recognized for the Social Entrepreneurship MBA course and practicum which has won awards for “Outstanding Social Return on Investment Program.” His research and practice focus on social impact evaluation, impact investment and social return on investment.

Sanders graduated from Leadership Howard County’s Premier program in 2019. He leads the Aging in Place Workgroup with The Village in Howard County and belongs to the Healthy Aging, Health Improvement Coalition, the Coalition for Affordable Housing and the Planning and Program Committee with the Community Action Council. He is also a mentor with the Association of Community Services.

Previously, Sanders was director of strategy and new ventures for Honeywell International, where he led a series of teams that created strategy and new ventures. He directed strategy, mergers and acquisitions at Harris International, led a startup business, co-founded and managed a business incubator program at Maryland TEDCO and directed business incubation at the World Bank.

He served on the board of the Association for Corporate Growth National Chapter and the National Business Incubation Association. Sanders was research director for the Information Technology Association of America and a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors.

Sanders has lived in Howard County for more than 40 years.
