At the Community Foundation of Howard County’s Annual Dinner & Celebration of Philanthropy, President & CEO Melissa Curtin offered a powerful reflection on what philanthropy truly means for our community. More than a speech, her remarks were an invitation—to pause, to reflect, and to recognize that generosity begins in the human heart and ripples outward to strengthen lives, families, and neighborhoods across Howard County.
Drawing on both science and lived experience, Melissa spoke about the heart as a source of connection, empathy, and action. She reminded us that giving is not only good for our community—it is good for us. When we give, volunteer, and show up for one another, we reduce stress, build trust, and create the conditions for hope to take root. Philanthropy, she shared, is not abstract—it is deeply human.
Melissa also grounded this reflection in the lived realities of Howard County: families facing food insecurity, seniors choosing between medicine and groceries, students with dreams but limited access to opportunity. She acknowledged both the strengths our county is known for and the inequities that persist beneath the surface—and challenged us to hold pride and responsibility at the same time.
Above all, her remarks affirmed the role of the Community Foundation as a steward of hope—connecting people who care with causes that matter, and helping our community move forward together. In a time when the world can feel overwhelming, Melissa reminded us that change happens in rooms like this, with people like you, deciding—together—what kind of community we want to be.
